Lab Note 04Solar Study 001

When a product becomes material.

Separating Solar Study 001 from the tool that made it possible.

Digital ArtAuthorshipSystems

Solar Study 001 uses the same live Earth renderer that powers Across Hours, but it is not a product demo. Making the artwork meant deciding which parts of the system were infrastructure, which parts were interface and which parts could become material.

01

Remove the task.

Across Hours is built to help someone understand time. Search, selection and local context all serve that task. Solar Study removes that utility layer and leaves the live relationship between geography, sunlight, viewpoint and movement.

The underlying solar model stays real. What changes is the reason for looking at it.

02

Authorship needed boundaries.

If every parameter is exposed, the work becomes a generic globe generator. If nothing can move, the live system loses part of what makes it interesting. The edition therefore separates authored language from configurable composition.

The monochrome palette, geography, solar behaviour, terminator treatment and overall visual language stay locked. Viewpoint, framing, motion, rotation axis and temporal behaviour can vary inside those authored bounds.

03

The product remains inspectable.

I like that the artwork does not hide where it came from. Across Hours remains a functioning product and Solar Study remains a work in its own right. The relationship is part of the provenance: one system can produce utility in one context and visual experience in another without pretending those are the same thing.
